Wingman overlay: the two permissions it needs
The Wingman overlay is optional. It helps you reply inside the chat apps you already use, and it needs two Android permissions. Keefie asks for each one only after explaining it in the app, and the rest of Keefie works without them.
1. Display over other apps. This lets the Keefie bubble and its reply panel appear on top of your chat apps, so you can get help without leaving the chat. It only lets Keefie draw on the screen. It does not let Keefie read anything.
2. Accessibility Service. This lets Keefie notice when a chat's message box is open in a supported app, so the bubble can appear, and, only after you tap the bubble, read the chat that is visible on your screen. Before you tap, Keefie does not read or store your messages.
Supported apps:
- Messaging and social: WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business, Instagram, Snapchat, Discord
- Dating: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Aisle, TrulyMadly, QuackQuack, happn, Hily, Boo, Feeld, Plenty of Fish, Muzz, Badoo, OkCupid, Match, Coffee Meets Bagel
When you tap the bubble, Keefie reads:
- Messages: the messages visible in the open chat, and whether each one is yours or theirs
- Contacts: the contact or group name shown at the top of the chat, and in group chats the display names of the people who sent the messages
- Details shown with the messages: the time and day, and a message quoted in a reply
- Whether the chat is a group, and which supported app (and app version) you are using, so the overlay reads that app correctly
We send this data to our servers and to the AI providers described in section 4 (OpenRouter, which runs DeepSeek's model on CoreWeave) only to generate reply suggestions and to keep context about that person in your People list. We do not sell it and we do not use it for advertising.
The chat read by the overlay is kept for up to 7 days so Keefie can follow that conversation, then it is deleted. Details about a person that are kept in your People list stay until you delete them or your account.
Keefie does not read apps outside the supported list and never sends messages for you. A reply is placed in the message box only when you tap it, and you send it yourself. You can turn either permission off at any time in your phone's settings (Settings → Accessibility → Keefie, and Settings → Apps → Keefie → Display over other apps); the overlay then stops working, and the rest of Keefie keeps working.
Contacts and calendar
Keefie does not read your phone's contact list, address book, or device calendar, and does not collect phone numbers from your contacts.
When you tap the Wingman bubble, the contact or group name shown in that chat may be read as described above and used to that person to your People list. That information comes from the chat screen, not from your device's contacts.
We may introduce optional contacts or calendar integrations in the future.
If we introduce such functionality, Keefie will request the appropriate device permission before accessing that information and will update applicable disclosures where required.
We will not access your contacts or calendar merely because such functionality may be offered in the future.
